From Office To Ocean

About

A little bit of my backstory

I grew up in a coastal New England town and spent most of my childhood daydreaming about sailing off to distant shores. After high school I attended a marine technical college and eventually earned a 100-ton Captain’s license. For a while I even made a go of it—running dinner dance boats and private yachts. Somewhere along the way, though, I realized that career wasn’t quite the romantic seafaring life I had imagined.

So I wandered into the business world for “a few years”… which somehow turned into about 35. Along the way I worked my way through the ranks as a sales engineer, sales manager, General Manager, and CEO. It was a good run, but eventually I figured it was time to get back to something a little more nautical—preferably the New England coast, on my own boat, at my own pace.

These days I spend my time cruising my classic trawler, keeping a small fleet of aging boats afloat, and occasionally working alongside my son on his commercial lobster boat. Between maintenance projects, questionable repair strategies, and the occasional successful day on the water, it keeps things interesting.

This blog documents the transition, the lessons learned, and the occasional questionable decision that comes with trading spreadsheets for tide charts. Along the way I’ve discovered that leaving one life behind to start another comes with its own kind of wisdom… most of it learned immediately after doing something the hard way.

Why a Blog and what you can expect from it

Sharing the Transition

I created "From Office To Ocean" to document & share the genuine, humorous, & sometimes challenging journey of reinventing yourself after decades in one career. Its also a space that allows me to keep learning.  Whether you're considering your own escape or simply enjoy stories of life on the water, I hope you find value & inspiration here.

No Sales Pitch

This blog is purely a passion project—a place to reflect, share a little hard-earned knowledge, and connect with others who dream about the day they finally trade the office chair for the helm seat.

It’s also my way of filling the void I suspect retirement might leave behind—giving me a perfectly respectable excuse to sit in front of a computer and think. Old habits never die… they just happen to come with better scenery now.

From Office To Ocean
